How MxD Partnership Helped Influence DMG MORI’s Decision to Expand to Chicago

When global manufacturing leader DMG MORI evaluated where to establish its new U.S. manufacturing facility, the decision came down to more than geography – it was about ecosystem, collaboration, and access to innovation. Chicago’s Goose Island ultimately stood out, due in part to DMG MORI’s growing partnership with MxD.

As the nation’s Digital Manufacturing and Cybersecurity Institute, MxD provides a neutral, collaborative environment where industry, government, and academia come together to solve critical manufacturing challenges. For DMG MORI – one of the world’s largest machine tool manufacturers – that environment offered a unique advantage.

“DMG MORI’s membership in MxD was a key factor in our decision to establish our new manufacturing facility on Goose Island,” said James Nudo, Chairman of DMG MORI Federal Services, Inc. “Our daily interactions with MxD employees and members demonstrated the power of high-level cooperation and reinforced the value of being part of a connected, forward-looking manufacturing ecosystem.”

DMG MORI will invest more than $40.5 million to expand the company’s footprint in Illinois, establishing a new advanced manufacturing and R&D facility – just a five-minute walk from MxD’s facility on Goose Island on Chicago’s Near Northwest Side.

Through its presence at MxD, DMG MORI has been able to engage directly with government stakeholders, including the U.S. Department of War, to accelerate alignment between manufacturing capabilities and national priorities.

A key component of this partnership is DMG MORI’s Mobile Factory, housed at the MxD Factory Floor. This advanced, modular manufacturing platform provides a hands-on environment for demonstrating cutting-edge technologies and capabilities. Notably, the MxD facility is currently the only location in the United States where the DMG MORI Mobile Factory is readily accessible to public and private sector partners.

“MxD exists to strengthen the U.S. industrial base by bringing together the right partners to solve the toughest manufacturing challenges,” said Berardino Baratta, CEO of MxD. “DMG MORI’s decision to expand in Chicago reflects the strength of this model, where collaboration, innovation, and mission alignment drive real investment and impact.”

By co-locating innovation, workforce development, and advanced manufacturing capabilities, the partnership between DMG MORI and MxD exemplifies how strategic collaboration can translate into tangible investment and strengthened domestic production capacity.
