RIA-JMTC MODERNIZATION PROGRAM: CAD CAM Ecosystem Transition Study

The objective of this Rock Island Arsenal-Joint Manufacturing and Technology Center (RIA-JMTC) project is to quantify the effort needed to transition RIA-JMTC from Siemens NX software to PTC Creo software.

Problem

Currently, RIA-JMTC must convert files to the NX format after receiving them from suppliers and customers. Translation of files from one format to another raises the risk of errors. Using Creo would remove that conversion step, reducing risk and the number of computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) design phases. But the requirements of such a transition must be fully determined.

Proposed Solution

The team will conduct a study to measure the total cost of transitioning CAD/CAM software from NX to Creo. That study will include product life cycle analysis, process mapping with impacts, cost comparisons, labor hours, and training costs.

Impact

This CAD/CAM ecosystem transition would help improve the ability of the RIA-JMTC — as well as other U.S. manufacturing and maintenance organizations — to manufacture, maintain, repair, and overhaul various ground systems and their associated components in a more efficient, effective, and affordable way.
