RIA-JMTC MODERNIZATION PROGRAM: Part Quality Inspection and Dashboard

MxD is implementing at-machine part inspection and a part-quality dashboard at Rock Island Arsenal-Joint Manufacturing and Technology Center (RIA-JMTC).

Problem

Disruptions such as the COVID-19 pandemic exposed deficiencies in U.S. manufacturing and supply chains, including in the organic industrial base (OIB), which supplies critical materials to the Department of Defense. Ensuring part quality is key to filling supply gaps.

Proposed Solution

The goal is to integrate a commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) 3D scanner, robotic arm/control system, and inspection software into an automated robotic inspection system. The project will utilize ARIS Technology’s proprietary software tools. Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence will install systems and software to facilitate the part-quality inspection on a machine at RIA-JMTC.

Impact

This initiative will help improve U.S. manufacturing and maintenance organizations and the JMTC’s ability to manufacture, maintain, repair, and overhaul various ground systems and their associated components in a more efficient, effective, and affordable way.
