Secure Wireless for Factory Operation

This project will investigate the various wireless technologies that can be used for secure factory operation in industrial environments and will provide guidance via an interactive selection tool.

Problem

Secure wireless connectivity solutions that allow flexibility, mobility, and less installation complexity are needed in manufacturing environments to support digital transformation advances. The cost of and physical space required for hardwired connection of manufacturing equipment mean it is no longer an economic or efficient solution. Sensors and other wireless sources of data collection on the factory floor will be increasingly relied upon.

Proposed Solution

The team will develop a comprehensive summary of existing and evolving wireless technologies, focusing on factors that are key to decisions about wireless systems for factory operation and comparing wireless technologies based on those factors. An interactive selection tool based on the summary will allow manufacturers to understand the options, compare wireless technologies, and find the solution that best fits their applications and needs.

Impact

This project will accelerate adoption of wireless communication protocols in manufacturing environments and enable further advancement of digital manufacturing solutions.
