MxD Launches Playbook for CMMC 2.0

Step-By-Step Guide Helps DoD Suppliers Achieve Compliance with Cybersecurity Guidance

(CHICAGO) June 28, 2022 – MxD, the national digital manufacturing and cybersecurity institute, today announced the release of the Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) 2.0 Playbook. The playbook delivers a quick start guide to achieving the first of three levels of compliance—labeling the security practices by degree of difficulty, clarifying instructions, and providing tips from lessons the MxD team learned while implementing these same security practices.

CMMC is a system of compliance levels that helps the government, specifically the Department of Defense, determine whether an organization has the security necessary to work with controlled or otherwise vulnerable data. Organizations looking to work or continue working with the DoD will need to be CMMC compliant.

“MxD completed Level 1 and saw firsthand the challenges an organization might face with a self-assessment,” said Laura Élan, Senior Director of Cybersecurity. “As the National Center for Cybersecurity in Manufacturing, we wanted to be an early adopter of the CMMC 2.0 requirements and use our experience as a guide to assist other organizations who will complete a self-assessment.”

Level 1 is the first or foundational tier of CMMC 2.0’s three levels. It has 17 security practices to master and requires an annual self-assessment. It is designed to protect Federal Contract Information (FCI) received by and shared with contractors and subcontractors. As part of its mission to model best practices and share resources related to cybersecurity for manufacturers, MxD intends to pursue additional levels beyond the completion of Level 1.

“Of our nation’s approximately 250,000 manufacturers, 98.5% are considered small- or mid-sized with less than 500 employees; 75% of manufacturers have less than 20 employees,” said Berardino Baratta, Vice President of Projects and Engineering and incoming CEO of MxD. “The Playbook helps these smaller organizations to assess their CMMC compliance in manageable segments to ensure they remain competitive for work with the DoD.”

MxD is committed to preparing manufacturers to compete in the decades to come. Enhanced cyber protection is key to that preparation. This Playbook, which complements the MxD Cyber Marketplace, will help U.S. manufacturers of all sizes get started.
